Loss, Grief & Bereavement Course

Loss, Grief & Bereavement

Day One: The Foundation
During the sessions of the day we shall examine what happens to us when we lose something or someone we love and the ‘normal’ reaction, thoughts, feelings and emotions we may experience as a result.
We shall look closely at how we process loss within the professional context, whilst analysing the stigma surrounding death, dying and bereavement both from the professional and societal perspective.
How we grieve as professionals has an impact on those we care for, so we shall explore strategies and tools that may help us utilise our experiences to both nurture our therapeutic relationships and develop an emotionally resilient self.

Day Two: The Stepping Stones
When caring for people who are dying and their families, it is our responsibility to ensure everyone feels cared for and has the necessary information appropriate to age and stage of development, so we shall explore resources currently available at our fingertips that may help people feel more in control. Care of the family is as important as care of the person, so during this day we shall examine the principles underpinning Anticipatory Grief, Complicated Grief, the support of children and young people and those living with a cognitive impairment or mental illness, as well as raising awareness of the theories of bereavement. The last session of the course shall remind us of the importance of self-care and self-compassion. Empathy and compassion should be our companions in all circumstances, so ensuring our supplies are regularly checked is a must.

This two-day course will be facilitated by the Hospice Palliative Care Specialist Staff.

No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear. I am not afraid, but the sensation is like being afraid
