Campaign Update

Update on Campaign to Save the 30 Care of the Elderly Beds

The Petition was presented to the Petitions Committee in the Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh on 18 December 2007.  At that time, the number of signatures on the Petition was over 60,000.   Over 200 supporters joined us in travelling to Edinburgh in five coaches to show their support for the Petition.

It was a great honour Cardinal Keith O’Brien joined the group to present the Petition to Parliament.  The Hospice Chairman, Chief Executive and Marjory McCance, who initiated the Petition, presented their case to the Petitions Committee.  Cardinal O’Brien also spoke directly to the Committee.

The Committee’s response to the Petition was very encouraging and the Committee have endeavoured to seek responses from the Health Board on the basis of their decision.

On 18 February 2008, the Committee revisited the Petition and agreed to seek a further response from the Scottish Government.

In addition, Des McNulty MSP, debated a motion at the opening of Scottish Parliament on 10 January 2008 on the Hospice’s future.  This motion was supported by Gil Paterson MSP, Margaret Curran MSP, Jackson Carlaw MSP, Ross Finnie MSP and David Whitton MSP.  Please click here to view a copy of the Debate.:

In the meantime, the campaign is ongoing and support for the Hospice continues.  At today’s date, the number of signatures on the Petition is close to 90,000.
