Becoming a Volunteer

Some of the reasons people have given for helping the Hospice as a Volunteer are: recently retired, returning to work after family, at school, working part-time or they just a few evening to spare.

The Volunteer Group is very diverse so we need you to make it grow even more. We have challenging Volunteer opportunities where you can make a difference.

If you are interested in any of the areas of need and would like to progress to the next step, please contact the Human Resources Manager This is where it all begins!

You will then be invited to one of the Volunteer Events held in the following months:

Reading and talking to patients is a valuable way of giving your time

At the event, you will hear of the work of the Hospice in more detail and will be given an application pack. Upon completion of your application form you will be invited for interview. Your interview will be carried out by the Hospice Human Resource Manager, and a member of the Team from the department you have shown a preference for. References will be uplifted and a Disclosure Scotland Form will be completed. When references have been returned and clearance has been obtained from Disclosure Scotland, you will be invited to join the St. Margaret of Scotland Volunteer Training Course.

Volunteer Training Course

The Volunteer Training Course will be a series of four sessions each lasting two hours.

The aim of the Course is intended to be a broad introduction to St. Margaret of Scotland Hospice and the role of the Volunteer. The Course will be a foundation for further training and development.

Learning Outcomes:

To gain a basic knowledge and general understanding of the:

  • Function and structure of St. Margaret of Scotland Hospice

  • Basic principles of Palliative Care

  • Health and Safety requirements both personal and organisational

  • Communication skills required when communicating with patients, families, the wider Hospice Team, the public in general and whilst representing the Hospice

  • The importance of caring for self

Practical experience in your area of preference will be an integral component of your training. It is important you have an opportunity to test your preference and meet the Team of Volunteers you will join.
